Cannot create a shortcut on the Start menu due to corrupt Start directory.
Cause:
The Start directory is corrupt.
Solution:
Rename the Start directory and reboot the computer to automatically create a new Start menu.
1) Search for the 'Start' menu folder using the 'Start' menu's 'Find' feature:
a) Select 'Find' from the 'Start' menu.
b) Select 'Files or Folders...'.
c) Type 'Start' in the 'Named' box.
d) Select the C:\ drive from the 'Look In' drop-down list box.
e) Select 'Include all subfolders' and click 'Find Now'. (The 'Start' folder appears in the 'Find: Files named <filename>' dialog box.)
2) Rename the Start folder:
a) Right-click on the 'Start' folder in the 'Find; Files named <filename>' dialog box.
b) Select 'Rename' from the pop-up menu.
c) Type a new name for the Start folder.
d) Close the 'Find' window.
e) Shut down Windows and reboot the computer.
